The heart acts as the motor of our circulatory system. The size corresponds approximately to the fist size of the owner. It weighs an average of between 300 and 350 grams. With high regular exercise such as intensive endurance sports and with some diseases such as high blood pressure, the heart can also become significantly larger and heavier.

The organ is surrounded by a tissue envelope, the so-called pericardium. In addition, the heart is covered by a second shell, the epicardium, which lies directly on the heart. The space between these two shells is filled with blood serum. The coronary arteries run directly under the second sheath. They supply the heart with nutrients and oxygen. The heart wall mainly consists of special muscle fibers (endocardium), which only occur in this organ. These muscle fibers also form the heart valves.

The heart is divided into two halves of the heart, which are separated by a septum. The left and stronger half of the heart pumps the blood into the circulation that runs through the entire body. The right ventricle is only responsible for supplying the lungs. The two halves form a perfectly coordinated unit. Each half of the heart is composed of an atrium (atrium) and a heart chamber (ventricle). In between is a heart valve that can only be opened in one direction. This prevents blood from flowing back.

The large artery (aorta) arises from the left ventricle and the pulmonary artery (pulmonary artery) from the right ventricle. The constant contraction of the heart pushes the blood through the entire body like a pump. In this way, around 300 liters of blood per hour are pumped through the heart and all organs, tissues and every other body cell are supplied with sufficient oxygen, nutrients, vitamins, minerals, messenger substances and other important substances. The heart has to beat continuously to ensure this supply. It hits 100,000 times on average per day. (vb)
