New findings on the transferability of the corona virus
The new type of corona virus continues to worry authorities around the world. The dangerous pathogen spreads faster again. Almost 35,000 infections have now been confirmed in China. In Germany the number of infected people has risen to 14. A research team has now gained new insights into the transferability of the germs.
Recently, researchers reported in the journal "Journal of Hospital Infection" that the new type of corona virus remains infectious on surfaces for up to nine days and that door handles, handles and the like are a possible transmission path for the pathogen. Scientists have now gained new insights into the transmissibility of the pathogen.
Infectious viruses even with mild symptoms
According to a recent announcement, studies by Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Bundeswehr Institute for Microbiology and the Munich Clinic Schwabing have shown that some of the patients currently treated at the Munich Clinic Schwabing with coronavirus infection have infectious viruses in their noses, even with mild symptoms - Show throat space.
The research groups conclude that infected people with weak symptoms can also transmit the virus.
Virus excretions are checked
According to the information, the Charité Institute of Virology and the Bundeswehr Institute of Microbiology have been supporting the diagnosis of this new viral infection since the first German 2019 nCoV case.
As part of control examinations, the two laboratories regularly and independently check the virus excretions in the patients cared for in the Munich Clinic Schwabing.
In these investigations it was found in several cases that infectious virus from the nasopharynx can be grown in cell cultures by only slightly symptomatic patients.
Signs of illness resembled a harmless common cold
The symptoms of the examined patients were more like a harmless cold than a serious pneumonia.
At the same time, both laboratories found evidence that the novel coronavirus in those affected also multiplied in the nasopharynx and digestive tract, regardless of the lungs.
As stated in the communication, these observations are clear indications that the virus can be transmitted even in the event of mild or beginning cold symptoms (sore throat, signs of an acute sinus infection, mild general feeling of illness without fever).
It is important to know, however, that the source (s) and routes of transmission of the infection have not been finally clarified, according to a leaflet from the Federal Foreign Office. “The majority of infections are transmitted by people who show symptoms. However, at least in individual cases, people can already be contagious during the incubation period, ”write the experts. (ad)
