Study: Lung aging can be slowed down by eating right

It is known that lung function also decreases in healthy people due to age. However, an international study has now shown that this natural degradation process can apparently be slowed down by eating well.

Various studies have shown that diet can also affect the lungs. For example, a diet high in vegetables, fruits and whole grains can lower the risk of asthma and reduce the severity of symptoms in people with existing asthma. The right foods can also slow down the aging process of the lungs.

Tomatoes, apples and bananas

As the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) reports, an international study has shown that a healthy diet can apparently slow down the natural aging process of the lungs.

For the study, the researchers evaluated the data of 680 adults from Germany, Great Britain and Norway. Lung function was tested in all participants at the start of the study and after a period of ten years. They also had to fill out a detailed nutritional questionnaire.

According to the study, lung function was best for those who took more than two daily tomatoes and had eaten at least three servings of fresh fruit - especially tomatoes Apples and Bananas.

The research results were published in the European Respiratory Journal.

Especially former smokers benefit

The scientists believe that certain ingredients in fruits and vegetables, such as antioxidants, promote the recovery of lung function.

According to the information, this positive effect was most noticeable among former smokers, possibly because nicotine damage is better repaired with lots of fruits and vegetables.

The daily consumption of fruits and vegetables is not only important for the cardiovascular system and intestinal health, but also for the lung function.

Regular exercise

In addition to the right nutrition, it is also important for a healthy lung not to smoke. It is also ideal if the “anti-aging program” for the lungs is supplemented by exercise and sport.

As the lung information service of the Helmholtz Center in Munich explains, endurance and fitness sports in combination with muscle building are particularly suitable to improve physical performance. These should always be adapted to your own physical performance.

Smaller activities also have a positive effect on health. For example, climbing stairs instead of taking the elevator or walking short distances instead of driving.

According to the experts, sports that can improve performance include brisk walking / Nordic walking, running and jogging, cycling (also at home on the ergometer / exercise bike), swimming, hiking and skiing, cross-country skiing, inline skating and also dancing.

The pulmonary information service indicates that healthy adults should exercise at least 150 minutes a week or 75 minutes of intense physical activity per week, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). (ad)
